Thanks to BYU engineers, Tanner Jensen can cruise around the neighborhood with a small, light, and very inexpensive wheelchair.  This battery-operated wheelchair is made from a PVC-pipe frame that can be adjusted as he grows.  The wheelchair is powered by a 12-volt 5Ah sealed-lead acid (SLA) battery which is available at Batteryheads.com.

The BYU mechanical engineering students who designed the chair have meet an great need in the medical community.  The chair can be folder and easily placed in the trunk of a chair, eliminating the need for a mechanical lift.

Best of all, the instructions to build the affordable chair are offered free online at openwheelchair.org.
