  • I Need a New Battery for my Laptop: Part 1

    Should I buy a replacement battery or one from the manufacturer?

    New replacement batteries for your laptop at Batteryheads.comSooner or later your laptop battery will begin to wear out.  Most of them perform well for 18 months to 3 years, depending upon how heavily they are used.  Then you will notice a slow decline in the ability to take a full charge and eventually it will be time to replace it.

    Most laptop batteries can be recharged 300-500 times before the battery cells begin to wear out. When that decline begins, the battery that used to power your laptop for three hours will now only run for an hour or less. It is time to replace the battery. Continue reading

  • 3 Pillars of Photography: What is ISO?

    Our series on the basic 3 Pillars of Photography continues with "What is ISO?"

    What is ISO?

    ISO is actually an Organization

    ISO is not an acronym and is actually pronounced "EYE-so", not "eye-es-oh".  ISO stands for the International Organization of Standardization.  The ISO is an independent, non-governmental international organization which gives world-class specifications for products, services and systems.  The ISO has published more than 19,000 international standards.

    "Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always ISO." (source: www.iso.org) Continue reading

  • Tips for Food Photography

    4 Tips for Food Photography: Expert food photographers share their ideas for photographing food.

    Tips for Photographing Food

    1. Background {Use a Contrasting Background}

    A common misconception about shooting images of your beautiful food creations is to use a white background, thinking that it will offer a clean, neutral backdrop that will highlight the colors of your creation.  Try using a darker surface to provide more of a contrast.

    Food Photography Tips

    2. Scene Preparation {Prep the Scene}

    While photographing people, you can move them around and adjust their angle and smiles, food can be more difficult to adjust.  Your window of shooting time can be limited by the changing temperature of your food.  Think melted ice and ingredients that thicken as they cool.  Lighting has to be right and it isn’t just about the food in the shot.  Get the setting, background and lighting right first, then slip in the food for the picture.

    Food Photography Tips

    3. What is the Story behind the food? {Find the Story}

    Use all the elements to tell the story of the food.  Besides the food itself, this can include the background, angles, and props.  What is the dish intended for?  Quick snack or fancy dinner?  Envision the food from several different angles then create your photo.  Does it look better in a close-up or something with a broader shot?

    Tips for Food Photography 4. When is the Perfect Moment? {Wait for the Perfect Moment}

    Food seems to be a big part of many life events.  That can lead to potential problems with photographing the food. Most people do not look as flattering in a photograph when they are ready to take a bite or while chewing their food. Try a telephoto lens and watch and wait.  Wait for the smile that comes while part of a conversation and then you’ve got the great shot.  Being able to integrate food into the story of the photo while still having a complementary shot of the subject is splendid.

  • Battery Power for Drone and RC Transmitters

    Drone Sales Surge in 2015

    The Consumer Electronics Association reports that drone sales were expected to spike over $103 million in 2015, as noted by U.S. News & World Report.  While drones are all the rage, battery power for drone and remote-control device transmitters is often overlooked.  The transmitters usually run on standard alkaline batteries.  Often the batteries run out after just a few hours of transmitter usage.

    A great choice for powering the RC transmitters is rechargeable batteries.  The Panasonic eneloop batteries, sold by Batteryheads, deliver advanced, individual cell charging capabilities.  Batteries can be purchased in packs either with or without a battery charger.

    The advanced AC charger is designed to charge the battery cells individually. This allows you to completely charge fully discharged cells or just "top off" the charge of AA or AAA cells that are only partially drained.  By not throwing away used AA batteries so often, you are saving money.  Another advantage is having charged batteries ready to use when your other batteries run out of power.
